The Haut à Courroies was the first bag Hermès ever made — a tall saddle-carrier from the 1890s built to move riding kit between château and stable — and the Hac à Dos is its most surprising descendant: the HAC reimagined as a backpack. Introduced in recent seasons for the modern traveller, it keeps the tall proportions, belted spirit and workmanlike honesty of the original while freeing both hands. This example comes in Etoupe, the celebrated greige that has become shorthand for quiet Hermès taste, rendered in Togo whose pebbled resilience makes it a true daily workhorse. Etoupe is particularly suited to a piece worn against tailoring and knitwear alike; it neutralises the sportiness of the silhouette and lends it townhouse manners. Palladium hardware keeps the utilitarian mood cool and technical. On the shoulders it reads as understatement itself — the rare luxury backpack with no logo hunger, recognisable only to those who know.
