The Birkin 25 in shiny porosus crocodile black with palladium hardware is the configuration that, when collectors discuss the platonic Birkin, they tend to mean. Year D production stamp, unworn condition. Crocodylus porosus — the saltwater crocodile — is the rarest of the three exotic species Hermès works with, and it produces the most regularly-scaled, most uniformly-proportioned, and structurally most prestigious skins in luxury leatherwork. Porosus scales are smaller and squarer than alligator's, and they sit in highly regular ranks across the body. In the shiny finish — hand-polished cabochon-burnished, scale by scale, by hand — the surface achieves a lacquer-like reflectivity that no other leather can replicate. The black colour dye penetrates each scale evenly, producing the deepest, most absorptive jet in the maison's exotic palette. This Birkin 25 is the most allocated, most fashion-relevant Birkin proportion in current production.
