Mississippi alligator's softly-rounded scales are larger and more uniformly spaced than those of niloticus crocodile, giving the Birkin a calmer, almost geological surface texture. In the matte finish, the dye sits in the hide rather than on it: the result is a leather that reads more as a stone or a textile than as a polished hide.
