The Dépêches began life as a document case for men and has become, quietly, the most useful small bag Hermès makes. The name is French for dispatches, and the brief has not changed since the 1930s: carry papers, carry them flat, carry them without announcing what you are carrying. What has changed is who buys it. The Dépêches is now bought as often by women as by men, worn as a slim clutch under the arm or slotted into a larger bag as an organiser. It holds a passport, a phone, a folded document and a card case, and it does so without the bulk that a zipped pouch adds. Black Epsom is the version to own. Epsom is the leather Hermès reaches for when a piece needs to stay flat and rectilinear — the pressed grain resists creasing at the fold, keeps its shape in a briefcase, and wipes clean rather than absorbing marks. In black it becomes almost architectural: a clean rectangle, a single palladium turn closure, no visible stitching drama and no logo. Stamped Y and store fresh, never carried. The edges are lacquered and unmarked, the hardware still carries its protective film, and the interior is untouched. Supplied with box and dust bag. Priced at £7,000. The Dépêches is one of the few Hermès leather goods still priced sensibly relative to its construction — hand-finished, single-craftsman, and made in the same ateliers as the Birkin. It is the piece we recommend most often to clients buying their first Hermès leather good, and the one existing collectors come back for second. Available for private viewing by appointment at JULL Knightsbridge, London. Enquire for full condition notes and provenance detail.
