Craie is Hermès' chalk-white — a soft, warm off-white with none of the coldness of a true white and none of the greying tendency of Argile or Nata. On Togo, the pebbled Bull calfskin that has been the workhorse of the Birkin line since the late 1990s, Craie develops a subtle luminosity that photographs beautifully and wears with almost every neutral in the wardrobe. The Birkin 25 is the size for someone who has already carried a 30 or 35 and understood what a Birkin is actually used for. It is a wallet, a phone, keys, sunglasses and a small notebook — the daily edit rather than the office contents. In Craie it becomes a light-carrying piece to be worn spring through autumn, and against palladium hardware the finish is clean and unfussy. Togo takes hand-marks and lightly softens over its first year, which makes provenance particularly important. This example is stamped G and store fresh, still wearing its felt sleeves around the sangles, its palladium plaques unmarked, its corners perfectly held. The base is unscuffed and the strap thread is unpulled — every hallmark of a piece that has never entered daily rotation.
