Some pairings at Hermès are less a choice than an inheritance, and Rouge H with gold hardware is chief among them. This is the maison’s founding red — introduced for its saddlery leathers in the 1930s and named simply “H red”, as if no further explanation were needed — a deep, wine-dark crimson shaded with brown and aubergine that has outlived every fashionable red the house has issued since. Warm gold hardware is its historic companion: the two registers share the same undertone, so the metal seems to glow out of the leather rather than sit upon it, giving the bag the air of something inherited rather than acquired. The canvas is Togo, the pebbled calfskin whose grain gives Rouge H its extraordinary depth — every peak refracts the colour a shade differently, so the surface moves between claret and mahogany with the light — while shrugging off the marks of daily carrying.
